The FBI pushed back sharply Wednesday against the release of a GOP memo criticizing the bureau’s use of secret surveillance orders — escalating a remarkable public standoff between the White House and the nation’s top law enforcement agency.
The memo reportedly includes allegations that the DOJ and FBI used some of the information in a controversial dossier to seek a warrant to spy on former Trump campaign staffer Carter Page. The dossier, compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, contains unsubstantiated claims connecting Trump and Russian officials. It was bankrolled by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee
“As expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about the material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy,’’ the FBI said in a statement.
It is highly unusual for the White House and the FBI to be publicly at odds over a matter of national security, and it was unclear what impact the disagreement might have on the standing of FBI Director Christopher A. Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, two Trump appointees who went to the White House Monday to urge the memo not be released.
That private lobbying effort now has morphed into a public fight, the outcome of which is unclear. Both sides expect that the memo in question will be released soon.
“The FBI takes seriously its obligations to the FISA Court and its compliance with procedures overseen by career professionals in the Department of Justice and the FBI. We are committed to working with the appropriate oversight entities to ensure the continuing integrity of the FISA process,’’ the statement said.
Why the hell should we believe the people trying to cover their asses?? They should shut the hell up and let everyone see the stuff since they are so sure it is all kosher
